Once exposed to clay's silken malleability, it was not long before I changed my interests from collecting ceramics to making my own. Lured by the quiet contemplative process of throwing, I began a new phase of my relationship with clay. In a world over run with materialism where the masses are continually hurrying; rushing through life, it became increasingly important for me to recognize the significance of slowing down and being present. Working with clay not only encourages but requires this focus.
My forms come from a need to create what I want to see and have been strongly influenced by Asian ceramics with particular focus on Japan. It was time I spent working and living in Japan that initiated my jump from seeing to doing. Profoundly affected by their age-old traditions and art, I found myself emulating that simplicity in my own work. My work takes a conscious interest in profile and proportion. Paying careful attention to clean surfaces, much of what I make speaks through the subtle and indelible marks that come through creating by hand. I pay close attention to the use of line as an element of design and its effects on glaze, using one to compliment the other. My pieces reflect a relationship that I foster through an understanding of the medium and the pleasure of working in series. | ![]() |
